The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a piece of EU legislation that aims to keep people’s data safer and gives people more control over how their personal information is used. There are huge fines for companies that breach the legislation so it’s important to start communicating with your teams before it comes into effect on 25th May 2018.

Get it seen

It won’t be enough to just pop it up onto your intranet, use all the channels you have available. More is definitely better than less in this instance!

Don’t mention GDPR…

…well at least not at the beginning. If your teams aren’t technical getting them onboard and engaged is the first step. Once you have their attention you can explain GDPR in more detail.

Personal

Tell personal stories that show why it’s important to get this right. Use a real story if possible, if not go for a scenario that’s relevant to your people.

Return to it often

Follow up your initial launch communications with more information and updates. This will keep GDPR front of everyone’s mind.
